The Canadian live performance industry is worth $3.8 billion–and it’s getting bigger

CAPACOA, the Canadian Association for the Performing Arts, just released a statistical analysis encompassing all the performer arts industries in the country. Here’s what we learned.

  • There are exactly 11,503 organizations and business in Canada involved in live performances on some level. It supports 72,000 employees.
  • 7 out of 10 Canadians are accessing the products of these organizations through TV, online or other media channels.
  • The industry contributed $3.3 billion to Canadian GDP.
  • Revenues totaled $3.8 billion (2019, the latest year for which stats are available). That generated $190 million in GST/HST for the government.\
  • International visitors who took in our performances brought in $220 million. That equals 1.1 of all tourism.
  • For every dollar invested into the industry, the economy benefits by $8.50.
