The Short List for the 2023 Polaris Music Prize is here!

In a process that started last year, more than 200 music boffins across country nominated, debated, and then voted on more than 200 albums with the goal of whittling things down to the best Canadian album of the year regardless of genre or commercial success. The first round of voting resulted in the Long List back on June 13. Now we have the Short List of ten finalists. Once of these records will be chosen by a sequestered Grand Jury and awarded a cash prize of $50,000.

Here they are in alphabetical order. If you’re not familiar with them, there’s your summer homework. You can listen to them all here.

Alvvays – Blue Rev
Aysanabee – Watin
Begonia – Powder Blue
Daniel Caesar – Never Enough
Feist – Multitudes
Debby Friday – Good Luck
Gayance – Masquerade
Dan Mangan – Being Somewhere
The Sadies – Colder Streams
Snotty Nose Rez Kids – I’m Good, HBU?

The Grand Prize will be awarded at the Gala event at Massey Hall on September 19. Get your tickets here.

  • Top three for me, and I wouldn’t call any of those genre’s something that I would go listen to, but I did enjoy Daniel Caesar, Alvvays, and Debby Friday.
