A Montreal mall has weaponized “Baby Shark”

As of this morning, “Baby Shark” has received 15,344,229,915 views on YouTube, more than any other video. It’s getting a few more thanks to a mall/office in downtown Montreal called Complexe Desjardins on Ste-Catherine.

Like many buildings are used by unhoused people for shelter. Things are apparently so crowded and dangerous in the stairwells and foyers of Complexe Desjardins that they’ve brought out the heavy guns. That means “Baby Shark.”

In an attempt to keep people from loitering at all hours, building managers have been playing “Baby Shark” on a loop (and at various speeds) throughout the parts of the building where the homeless congregate. This has been going on for at least a year–and the results have been promising. There’s been a noticeable improvement in the security issues at the mall.

Not everyone is pleased with this. One advocate for the homeless calls this “cruel and unusual” and does nothing but force people to look elsewhere for shelter.

The CBC has the whole story.
