Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell has just days to live. UPDATE: Steve has passed away at age 56.

Smash Mouth frontman Steve Harwell has just “days to live” as he’s receiving hospice care at home. The singer has not been well for the past eight years or so.

Steve hasn’t been with Smash Mouth since 2021 when he retired following issues at a gig. Here’s a statement from a band rep:  “Steve has been dealing with long-term medical issues over the last eight years and during his last performance at the Big Sip [Beer and Wine Festival at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in New York] he suffered numerous symptoms directly linked with his current medical situation. As of today, Steve will be retiring from Smash Mouth to focus on his physical and mental health.”

This came on top of a diagnosis of cardiomyopathy in 2015. He was later to have found to suffer from acute Wernicke encephalopathy. Symptons include problems with balance and movement, plus confusion, and damaged eyesight. Before that, Steve had struggles with alcohol which contributed greatly to his current problems with liver failure.

UPDATE: Steve passed away today (September 4). His manager says he “passed peacefully and comfortably” at his home in Boise, Idaho. He was 56.
