Want a free twenty bucks? If you bought some consumer electronics between 2004 and 2010, you may qualify.

Free money? Sure!

A $29.7 million settlement has been reached in a price-fixing class action suit in Ontario, BC, and Quebec regarding optical drives sold between 2004 and 2010. That includes CD players, DVD players, Blu-ray players, computer drives, and gaming consoles made and sold by BenQ, Hitachi-LG, NEC, Panasonic, Phillips, Pioneer, Quanta, Sony, TEAC and Toshiba Samsung. It’s been determined that they all conspired to artificially inflate the prices of disc drives in a case of gouging customers.

No one is really sure how much we may have been overcharged, but at least this is something. The settlement is the result of all the manufacturers making an offer to make all this go away.

Bottom line is that if you even think you bought a device containing an optical disc drive, you can fill out this form and get your piece of the pie. And get this: No proof of purchase is required. You have until November 14, 2022 to make your claim. Godspeed.
